Freshly Harvested Muscadine Grapes
What Makes the Fresh Muscadine So Unique
Historically known in Southern communities as “bullis” or “bullet” grapes, muscadines are big, round, and completely native to the American Southeast. You can easily tell when they are ripe by their color. They grow in beautiful dark purple or bronzy-green shades. Unlike regular grocery store grapes, muscadines have a very thick, tough skin and large seeds inside. This natural shield helps them thrive perfectly in the intense Southern heat and humidity, making them incredibly sweet and packed full of healthy nutrients.

Field Research & History Insights
- The Legacy of David Williams Sr.: The farm’s foundation was built over decades of hard work by the late family patriarch, David Williams Sr. His lifelong mastery of farming earned him the title of South Carolina’s Agriculturalist of the Year in 2010 when he was 92 years old.
- Keeping Land in the Family: Following their patriarch’s blueprint, the children and grandchildren of the Williams family still run the 5-acre vineyard by hand. This dedicated daily work preserves their family heritage and protects their land from commercial development.
- Traditional Craft and Uses: The long relationship between local Gullah Geechee communities and native muscadine vines highlights a rich history of self-reliance. For generations, families have used these native grapes to hand-craft sweet natural juices, artisan wines, and homemade jellies.
