“We exists to preserve, uncover and celebrate the ancestral legacies of African American families.”

Official Geographic Focus: Williamsburg County, SC
Our Methodology
Grounded in preservation, citation and historical rigor, the Institute organizes dispersed records into structured archival series. We exist to support research, public interpretation and scholarly collaboration.

Foundations of the Archive
Series I: Reconstruction & Citizenship Militia, census, and labor records. Documents the transition to civil rights and post-war labor.
Series II: Economic & Credit Systems Daybooks, ledgers, and accounts. Tracks agricultural finance and debt in Williamsburg County.
Series III: Voices of the Mingo Creek Corridor Letters, papers, and community records. A personal archive of the region’s social history.
Our Focus: Williamsburg County
Documenting the Williamsburgh District
To understand the history of this land, we have to go back to the original source. This 1825 Mills Atlas map is our starting point. We use it to trace back the old property lines and settlement boundaries that belong to our Gullah Geechee ancestors right here in Williamsburg County.
Archival Citation: Mills, Robert. Williamsburgh District, South Carolina. [1825] Map. Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress.
